The purpose of the job is to function as patient care manager coordinating unit operations, on the assigned shift, to ensure continuity of care and treatment goals. The incumbent provides clinical direction to non-professional nursing staff by delegating work and assignments appropriately while providing feedback to the employees regarding behavior and performance.


  1. Adheres to the ANA standards of care for psychiatric nurses.
  2. Perform duties within the scope of practice as defined by the nurse practice act.
  3. Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to perform head to toe assessment of the patient.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to interpret vital signs, laboratory results, electrocardiogram results and provides appropriate intervention(s) as needed.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to recognize signs and symptoms of medical and psychiatric illnesses. communicating findings to the physician,nurse practitioner or psychiatrist.
  6. Adhers to the recovery role model to prevent restraint and seclusion.
  7. Experience with the administration and effects of psychotropic medications.
  8. Administers medications accurately according to policy and procedure with safety precautions.
  9. Assigns and supervises staff medication administration.
  10. Knowledgeable on policies and procedures and ensures they are followed.
  11. Communicates procedural or other changes to the staff.
  12. Maintains competency and skills in CPR/AED, Bridge Building, IV, TB, accucheck, and Avatar.
  13. Participates on treatment team collaborating with all disciplines.
  14. Provides immediate feedback to subordinates regarding performance and behavior.
  15. Ensure that HIPPA regulations are followed to ensure patient confidentiality.
  16. Provides groups,education and counseling to clients.
  17. Directs staff in providing patient care.
  18. Ensures the safety of both patients and staff.
  19. Demonstrates an understanding of infection control practices and utilizes standard precautions.
  20. Adhere to the problem oriented documentation format.
  21. Transcribes orders accurately and legibly. Verifies medications via Quadramed.
  22. Assesses and intervenes with agitated, psychotic, escalating patients with focus on patient and staff safety.


Job Requirements:

  1. Current license as a Registered Nurse in Indiana.
  2. Bachelors Degree or Associate Degree from an accredited school of nursing.  Associate Degree accepted with three (3) years full-time professional experience in developmental disability, geriatric, or psychiatric nursing preferred.
  3. Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  4. Certified in professional rescuer CPR/AED, IV, and TB.
  5. Excel in both written and verbal interpersonal & communication skills.
  6. Must be able to work overtime.              


Difficulty of Work:

High:  Work is broad in scope involving complex program elements that require critical/analytical abilities.



High:  Responsible for all nursing care provided to patients on assigned units


Personal Work Relationships:

Multidisciplinary and interdepartmental; communicates with outside providers to assure continuity of care.


Physical Effort:

Able to perform Bridge Building and Basic Life Support; able to lift 50 lbs., bend, stoop, hear within normal range.


Working Conditions:

Most of the duties are performed on the patient unit, interacting with psychiatrically ill patients.  Must be able to handle moderately to highly stressful situations
